Sounding in Houston with Helton

So happy to be returning to Houston, TX on Monday night. I’ll be playing a solo set with video and an improvised set with bassist, Thomas Helton. Helton will also play a solo set. The concert is part of the They, Who Sound series presented by Nameless Sound and Lawndale.

It’s been almost 10 years since I’ve played in Houston. The last time was on another They, Who Sound event in September 2012(!). And it’s been at least that long since I played with Thomas, so this duo performance is long overdue. In fact, the last time I played with Thomas, I was performing on soprano sax–that’s how long it’s been.

Studio 300 Visit

I had a great visit recently to Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, for the Studio 300 Digital Art and Music Festival.

I performed my piece Crow Chases Red-tailed Hawk for custom aerophones and live electronics. And my sculpture A Work of Art for Every Entry in Index—Subjects—Library of Congress was included in the exhibition.

There were interesting Artist Talks by Chad Eby and Hunter Ewen, more concerts and exhibits, and fun AR soundwalk on campus. Kudos to Tim Polashek and his team for putting it all together.

First Time Holding Up A Hollow Mountain

The Cahaba Saxophone Quartet premieres my piece Holding Up A Hollow Mountain tonight at Railroad Park in Birmingham AL.

All of the pieces on the concert were inspired by locations in the area surrounding Railroad Park. My work references the history of mining in the nearby mountains. The concert is presented by the Birmingham Art Music Alliance and is supported by grants from the Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Book Launch

Poet Hank Lazer and I perform at a book launch event Wednesday September 29 at 5:30pm at my favorite local bookstore, Ernest & Hadley Booksellers in Tuscaloosa. We’re celebrating the publication of field recordings of mind in morning published by BlazeVox [books].

The book is accompanied by an album of 15 audio tracks–improvisations on banjo while Lazer reads his work.
