The Next Moment

The next concert in my Birmingham New Music Festival schedule is The Next Moment, tonight at East Village Arts in Birmingham, Alabama. I’m playing a new piece for extended banjo and live electronics that uses automated phone system samples (“To speak with a customer representative…press 9…”). Craig Hultgren will premiere As Safe As If It Were In The Fire for ecello and live electronics.

Composer’s Voice Feature

A recent episode of Composer’s Voice featured my music played by Miolina and Craig Hultgren. The half-hour show was produced by Rob Voisey and aired this weekend on Manhattan Neightborhood Network’s Lifestyle channel. If you missed the broadcast you can see the episode on YouTube or Facebook.

The video includes an excerpt from A Long Line of Clouds Just Above the Trees (2022) for violin duo and live electronics performed by Miolina: Lynn Bechtold (violin) and Mioi Takeda (violin). We received support for the project from the Collaborative Arts Research Initiative (CARI) at the University of Alabama. We workshopped the piece during a Summer 2021 residency at the Avaloch Farm Music Institute in New Hampshire.

The episode concludes with a complete performance of Snakeskin (Verso) (2019) for solo cello and live electronics performed by Craig Hultgren (ecello).

Hultgren in Tuscaloosa

I’m so pleased to have Craig Hultgren visit Tuscaloosa during his southern tour. He’ll be working with Moises Molina‘s cello students, meeting with New College students, and performing a concert that includes my piece Snakeskin (verso) for e-cello and electronics.

ICF 2022 Summer Festival Features Snakeskin

Cellist Craig Hultgren will perform my piece Snakeskin (verso) for cello and live electronics on Saturday, June 4 at 3pm during the Iowa Composers Forum 2022 Summer Festival of New Music. The festival will be held at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

I wrote Snakeskin (verso) for Craig after traveling to Iowa to work with him on the piece. Along with Craig’s invaluable input, the piece owes quite a bit to the region. I worked out most of the structure while sitting on a hop-covered patio at a brewery in downtown Decorah. And the title was inspired by visits to Effigy Mounds National Monument in Harpers Ferry, Iowa and Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville, Illinois.

It’s nice to see that some of my previous Badstar collaborators, Charles Nichols and Zach Duer, also have a piece on the program.

From Adams to Zappa

Parma Recordings presents the Madison New Music Ensemble directed by Joseph Koykkar in a live-streamed online concert of contemporary music that will also feature cellist Craig Hultgren performing my piece Snakeskin (Verso) for cello and live electronics.
