Taking a River for a Walk

2025
4-channel sound installation
duration: 17:22

Work Description: A sound installation that accompanies Karen Brummund’s single channel video piece Meander, a collaborative mural, and selected drawings.

A video monitor flanked by 2 speakers in a white art gallery. The monitor screen displays an abstract black and white image from Karen Brummund's video piece, Meander.

The work was exhibited as part of the Meander: Taking a River for a Walk exhibition at the Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The exhibition grew out of work Karen and I did with fourth grade students at Faucett-Vestavia Elementary School.

The piece includes field recordings and sounds from a set of custom drawing boards wired with contact microphones. Brummund and I led students through drawing exercises, and the drawing boards captured the sounds of the students’ work.

The project was supported by a Live Arts Learning grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
